Solid Patio Covers — Lexan, Aluminum & Cedar
A solid patio cover turns the deck or patio into a three-season room. In Tigard's eight-month rain calendar, a covered patio is the difference between an outdoor space you use twice a year and one you grill under in February. We build patio covers in three roof systems, and the right one depends on how much light you want and how the cover reads from inside the house:
- Lexan polycarbonate — lets daylight through to the rooms behind the patio, blocks UV so your furniture doesn't fade, and shrugs off Willamette Valley hail. The best choice when a solid roof would make the adjacent kitchen or family room too dark.
- Insulated aluminum panels — look like a finished, painted ceiling from below, stay dead-quiet in heavy rain (no drumming), and add real insulation value. The most popular cover for a clean, modern, low-maintenance finish.
- Tongue-and-groove cedar with a torch-down or standing-seam metal roof — the premium, custom-home look, with exposed cedar beams and the warmth of real wood overhead.
Every patio cover is engineered to Oregon snow loads, attached with a flashed ledger that won't leak into the house wall, built on 6×6 posts set on engineered concrete footings, and permitted through the local building department. The flashing and footing details are exactly where cheap "patio cover kits" fail — and where a leak quietly rots the wall behind the siding for years before anyone notices.
Pergolas — Cedar, Modern Slat & Louvered
A pergola is the patio cover for people who want some sun. We build several styles to match your house and how much shade you actually want:
- Cedar pergolas with traditional notched-and-pegged joinery and rafter tails — the classic garden look that ages to silver-gray.
- Modern slat-top pergolas with tight, evenly-spaced slats for architectural shade lines that move across the patio through the day.
- Louvered pergolas with rotating slats you open and close by hand crank or motor — full sun when you want it, full rain-shedding when you don't. The most versatile option for the Oregon climate, and increasingly the most-requested in Lake Oswego and West Linn.
Pergolas can be attached to the house or freestanding, sized over a hot tub or spa to the exact footprint, and built to tie into an adjacent deck and railing so the whole structure reads as one project.
Arbors & Retractable Awnings
For smaller accents, we build freestanding garden arbors and arbors over walk gates (see also fences, gates & arbors), climbing-rose and vine trellises, and retractable canvas or aluminum awnings for decks, patios, and second-story windows. A retractable awning is the budget-friendly way to add shade and rain cover to an existing deck without building a permanent structure — extend it for the barbecue, roll it back in for the view.
Built with the Same Cedar & Craftsmanship as Our Fences
Every pergola, arbor, and cedar cover we build uses the same fence-grade Western Red Cedar and stainless hardware we use everywhere else, so the fence line, the deck, and the patio cover all age to the same silver-gray patina together instead of clashing. That whole-yard consistency is one of the quiet advantages of hiring one Tigard contractor for the fence, the deck, and the cover rather than three different crews.
